The seven segment display dates back to century old. Single seven segment or number of segments arranged in an order meets our requirements. These LED’s or LCD are used to display the required numeral or alphabet. Liquid crystal displays (LCD) use the properties of liquid crystal for displaying. LED or light emitting diode is P-N junction diode which emits the energy in the form of light, differing from normal P-N junction diode which emits in the form of heat. The seven segment displays are made up of either LEDs (Light emitting diode) or LCDs (Liquid crystal display).

Its wide range of applications is in microwave ovens, calculators, washing machines, radios, digital clocks etc. The binary information can be displayed in the form of decimal using this seven segment display. Use of LEDs in seven segment displays made it more popular.

You can see the Seven Segment Display devices in TV shows counting down to ‘0’. Seven segment display is the most common device used for displaying digits and alphabet. Whereas all the anode connections of the LED segments are connected together to logic 1 in common anode seven segment display. We use logic 1 through a current limiting resistor to forward bias the individual anode terminals a to g. In common cathode seven segment display, all the cathode connections of LED segments are connected together to logic 0 or ground. Types of Seven Segment DisplaysĪccording to the type of application, there are two types of configurations of seven segment displays are common anode display and common cathode display. Seven segment displays must be controlled by other external devices where different types of microcontrollers are useful to communicate with these external devices, like switches, keypads, and memory. Therefore, Boolean expression for each decimal digit which requires respective light emitting diodes (LEDs) are ON or OFF. We can produce a truth table for each decimal digit. However, seven segment displays can form alphabets A, B, C, D, E, and F, so it can also used for representing hexadecimal digits. Since seven segment display can not form alphabet like X and Z, so it can not be used for alphabet and it can be used only for displaying decimal numerical magnitudes. In seven segment display, power (or voltage) at different pins can be applied at the same time, so we can form combinations of display numerical from 0 to 9.

The number 8 is displayed when the power is given to all the segments and if you disconnect the power for ‘g’, then it displays number 0. It consists seven segments of light emitting diodes (LEDs) which is assembled like numerical 8. It is widely used in digital clocks, basic calculators, electronic meters, and other electronic device that display numerical information. Seven segment displays are the output display device that provide a way to display information in the form of image or text or decimal numbers which is an alternative to the more complex dot matrix displays. A Light emitting diodes (LED) is an optical electrical energy into light energy when voltage is applied. Remote controls generate invisible light. Light Emitting Diode is most widely used semiconductor which emit either visible light or invisible infrared light when forward biased.
